Avoidance of costly tool & die coatings
LaserMatte® is a consistent and evenly textured finish that features small and equally placed micro craters. The Lasermatte® surface provides improved lubrication during drawing, leading to superior part to part consistency and prolonged die life. Greer Steel’s new LaserMatte® equipment is the only unit of its kind in the United States. It provides the ultimate finish for metal forming and painting operations.
Greer Steel is North America’s only provider of the unique LaserMatte® steel finish. This highly advanced surface texture improves manufacturing efficiency and enhances quality outcomes. Our state-of-the-art laser beam texturing equipment imparts a deterministic finish to the surface of work rolls, that when applied to the surface of the steel, creates a finish that provides a microscopic lubrication distribution system on the steel surface. The profile and design of this surface prevents the generation of metal fines typically associated with other standard textured surfaces, thereby minimizing the potential for contamination and subsequent wear, galling and scoring of the material and dies.
The laser textured surface is produced through a mechanically pulsed, high-energy CO2 laser to melt microscopic, circular surface areas on the roll. A gas jet then displaces the melted material, creating crater-like indentations. With computer settings providing repeatable crater depth, spacing, and size, material surface properties can be precisely controlled to fit various customer requirements. Laser texturing produces a uniform, regulated textured pattern, which allows for retention of consistent quantities of die lube, leading to greater consistency in metal forming operations.
